High Speed Counter

A-HSC

The Aparian High Speed Counter (A-HSC) is an industrial I/O module designed for high-speed counting, frequency measurement, and sequence-of-events (SOE) applications. It provides eight high-speed digital inputs, four digital outputs, four analog inputs, and one analog output.

The module supports Ethernet/IP and Modbus TCP communication, allowing counter values, I/O data, and diagnostic information to be exchanged with industrial controllers and other compatible devices. Modbus RTU communication is also supported over RS-232 or RS-485.

For applications requiring accurate event timestamps, the High Speed Counter supports IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP). Dual Ethernet ports with Device Level Ring (DLR) support provide additional network connectivity options.

  • 8 high-speed digital inputs for counter, frequency measurement, and Sequence-of-Events (SOE) applications.
  • 4 digital outputs.
  • 4 analog inputs and 1 analog output.
  • Primary interface modes:
    • EtherNet/IP Target (Class 1 connection)
    • Modbus TCP or Modbus RTU Server
    • Modbus TCP or Modbus RTU Client
  • Supports Modbus RTU communication over RS-232 or RS-485.
  • Modbus Auxiliary Map supports data exchange with multiple remote Modbus Server devices.
  • Slate software provides Modbus statistics, packet capture, and internal Modbus read functions for improved diagnostics.
  • Dual Ethernet ports with Device Level Ring (DLR) support.
  • IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) support for accurate SOE timestamp synchronization.
  • Small form factor – DIN rail mounted.

Overview

The module supports one of three Primary Interface modes:

EtherNet/IP Target

A remote EtherNet/IP device, such as a Logix controller, establishes a Class 1 cyclic connection to the module. Digital and analog I/O data, counter values, Sequence-of-Events data, and diagnostic information are exchanged using the module’s input and output assemblies.

Modbus Server

Digital and analog I/O data, counter values, Sequence-of-Events data, and diagnostics are written to, or read from, the module’s internal Modbus Registers. These registers can be accessed by a remote Modbus Client using Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU over RS-232, or Modbus RTU over RS-485.

Modbus Client

Digital and analog I/O data, counter values, Sequence-of-Events data, and diagnostics are written to, or read from, the module’s internal Modbus Registers. The Modbus Auxiliary Map can then be used to configure data exchange between multiple remote Modbus Server devices and the module’s internal Modbus Registers using Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU over RS-232, or Modbus RTU over RS-485.

The High Speed Counter provides eight isolated digital inputs that support 24 V and 5 V signals and are capable of operating at frequencies of up to 1 MHz. The inputs can be used for high-speed counting, frequency measurement, encoder applications, and Sequence-of-Events monitoring.

The module supports multiple counter and encoder operating modes, including:

  • Count and Direction
  • Count Up and Count Down
  • Quadrature X1, X2, and X4 using A, B, and Z signals

The module also provides four isolated digital solid-state relay outputs capable of operating at up to 100 Hz, four analog inputs configurable for current or voltage signals, and one analog current output.

Digital input events can be timestamped with an accuracy of 200 µs. Time synchronization is supported using either Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) or IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP), providing accurate time references for Sequence-of-Events applications.

The High Speed Counter is configured using the Aparian Slate application. This program can be downloaded from www.aparian.com free of charge.

Slate provides Modbus statistics, packet capture functionality, and internal Modbus register reads to simplify commissioning and remote diagnosis.

The module has two Ethernet ports and supports Device-Level-Ring (DLR) architectures.

An SD card can be used to back up the module firmware, application configuration, security configuration, and network parameters for disaster recovery.

The module’s security services include:

  • Configurable security levels
  • Encrypted EtherNet/IP communication
  • Fixed user roles and custom user accounts
  • Configurable password rules
  • User login expiry
  • Failed-login cool-off and account-disable options
  • Configurable global services and custom ports
  • Optional IP address Access Control List
  • Optional MAC address Access Control List
  • Restrictions on reset commands
  • Restrictions on device firmware update functions
  • Security audit trail recorded in the Event Log
