DeviceNet Monitor
A-DNM
The Aparian DeviceNet Monitor (A-DNM) provides real-time DeviceNet network monitoring and diagnostics for industrial control applications. It analyses DeviceNet conductor waveforms and identifies warning and alarm conditions to help detect network faults and deteriorating communication quality.
The module can be installed on an existing DeviceNet network and monitors up to 64 nodes, providing diagnostic information associated with individual devices. Analysis results are communicated directly to a Rockwell Automation ControlLogix or CompactLogix controller over EtherNet/IP, allowing network conditions to be monitored through Logix.
The DeviceNet Monitor supports all standard DeviceNet baud rates (125, 250, and 500 kbps). It also features dual Ethernet ports with Device Level Ring (DLR) support and Network Time Protocol (NTP) for external time synchronization.
- Real-time DeviceNet traffic monitoring and diagnostics.
- Monitors up to (all) 64 nodes on a DeviceNet network, with analysis linked to specific nodes
- Analysis results are available directly in Logix.
- Supports all DeviceNet Baud Rates (125k, 250k, 500k).
- Dual Ethernet ports which support Device-Level-Ring (DLR).
- Network Time Protocol (NTP) supported for external time synchronization.
- Small form factor – DIN rail mounted.
Overview
The module supports real-time diagnostic monitoring of a DeviceNet network using multiple analysis and communication modes.
EtherNet/IP Target
A remote EtherNet/IP device (e.g. a Logix controller) establishes multiple Class 1 connections to the module. DeviceNet diagnostic data is mapped between input and output cyclic connections of the controller, allowing up to 2KB input and 2KB output data exchange at the requested packet interval (RPI).
DeviceNet Network Monitoring
The module passively monitors the DeviceNet network without participating in bus arbitration or I/O scanning. It captures electrical and communication behaviour from all active nodes on the network (up to 64 nodes) and links diagnostic results to the corresponding node.
Waveform Acquisition and Analysis
The module uses high-speed Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADC) to sample the DeviceNet physical layer conductors including Power (V+), Shield, CAN-H, and CAN-L with respect to the V- reference line.
The sampled waveforms are processed and analysed against configurable warning and alarm thresholds. The resulting diagnostic parameters are made available to a Logix controller for operator alerting, maintenance diagnostics, and network health monitoring.
Node-Based Diagnostics
Each DeviceNet node is analysed individually by synchronising sampled waveform data with CAN transceiver receive activity. This allows diagnostic parameters to be correlated with the transmitting node at the time of capture.
Analysis and Reporting
Each sampling cycle produces approximately 16,000 data samples per channel. These samples are processed to calculate a range of electrical and signal integrity parameters including voltage levels, noise characteristics, rise and fall times, overshoot, undershoot, and signal stability metrics.
Each parameter is evaluated against configured High and Low Warning and Alarm setpoints. When thresholds are exceeded, corresponding status flags are set and latched. Alarm conditions remain latched until a manual clear command is issued, even if the parameter returns to normal operating range.
The DeviceNet Monitor is configured using the Aparian Slate application. This software can be downloaded from www.aparian.com free of charge.
The module provides dual Ethernet ports with support for Device-Level-Ring (DLR) topologies and includes a built-in webserver for configuration, diagnostics, and real-time network status monitoring without requiring additional software.
